No need to go anywhere else for great health care.

The Peterson Regional Medical Center has a long and proud history of serving the people of the Texas Hill Country. This tradition of service can be traced directly to the founders, whose vision was influenced by their remarkable father. Sid Peterson was a successful businessman who knew the virtue of hard work and honesty. He started the Peterson Foundation which funded a new community hospital for the Hill Country. Construction began in 1947, and on July 3, 1949, the Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital opened its doors, a fitting legacy for a man who had a deep and abiding affection for his fellow man. Even at the time of its dedication, Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital was a unique facility. Unlike many hospitals in Texas at the time, the hospital was built solely through the Foundation’s private funds and donations. No tax was ever imposed on the residents of the Hill Country to support the construction or operation of the hospital. It was also the first hospital in Texas to have central air conditioning.

In 1993 Sid Peterson Memorial was designated as one of the top 10 hospitals in the western United States in a federal study based on Medicare data. The region reviewed included the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Oklahoma. The study put Sid Peterson in the company of such famous facilities as the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

In April, 2008, the hospital staff relocated to the new Peterson Regional Medical Center just across the Guadalupe River. This new, state-of-the-art campus houses 250 acute care beds, an ambulatory surgery and rehabilitation center, emergency room, air-ambulance pad, complete diagnostics departments, blood and radiology laboratories, and a diverse women’s health center. As a regional, private healthcare center, Peterson serves eight counties in Central and Southwest Texas and has more than 80 affiliated physicians representing virtually every modern medical specialization. Peterson Regional Medical Center has incorporated leading-edge technologies designed to enhance the healthcare experience of each patient. The latest-and-best advances include:

  • The MyChild™ Infant Security System, one of the most comprehensive and reliable infant security systems on the market. The system uses umbilical transponder tags to make sure that no infants are taken past the security doors of the women’s health/maternity care unit.
  • “At Your Request,” a room service program available from 6:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. that provides patients with made-to-order meals delivered within 45 minutes of request.
  • Wireless monitoring that allows healthcare staff to monitor patients wherever they may be in the medical center; E-mar (electronic medical record) capability and bedside medication verification. These advanced technologies enhance patient safety; A 64-slice CT scanner and secondary 16-slice scanner to allow staff to accommodate both scheduled and emergency testing.
  • Wireless Internet capabilities and LCD televisions in each patient’s room.
  • An innovative water condensate recovery system, which will allow us to conserve area water resources by collecting 1 million gallons of water for landscape support.
  • 125 private rooms, each with a view of the surrounding Hill Country. Research shows that patients actually get better faster if they don’t share a room. Patients are less susceptible to disease transmission, the reduced room traffic means less stress for patients and caregivers, and most patients have higher morale during their hospital stay.
  • Family areas in each room can accommodate an overnight guest. The presence of families and friends contributes to the healing process.
  • The use of art throughout the medical center helps to lift the spirits of patients, visitors and staff alike. The art at Peterson Regional Medical Center is eclectic, with a variety of styles and mediums, but there is also a strong artistic link to images of the Hill Country such as the Guadalupe, wildflowers, Hill Country vistas, etc.
  • Modified racetrack design of patient units, which are served by two nurses’ stations. This design enhances efficiency and helps to reduce noise.
  • Thermostats in every room—patients can adjust the heating/cooling for their own comfort.

In addition to Peterson, Kerrville is home to an additional 35 clinics ranging in practice from oncology to physical therapy, wellness therapy, weight loss, aesthetics, and wholistic medicine. Preventive healthcare and healthy lifestyle is focused in the operation of more than a half-dozen private fitness centers.

Kerrville is full of great places to get cardiovascular exercise.

The Salvation Army Kroc Center will be a community, family, health, education and sports facility—one of only 34 in the U.S. and the only Kroc Center in Texas.
